HEALTHY BAKING INGREDIENT ALTERNATIVES FOR GUILT-FREE BAKING

Tuesday at 8pm; date night with Sandy, Noel, Prue and Paul. Chat is on point, and the food delicious. We are obviously talking The Great British Bake Off, and always come away wanting more! But the question on our lips; how do we make our favourite bakes healthier without sacrificing on taste and texture?! Aside from our low calorie (no added sugar) Slender Baking Mixes, after much research (and tasting!), we’ve come up with our top 5 baking substitutes to help you cut back on unnecessary sugar and fat and keep your diet on track.

Natural peanut butter for reduced-fat peanut butter
Hands up who loves peanut butter! Tempting as it may be to opt for reduced-fat versions, these tend to have more additives; including sugar and salt; than the classics. Natural peanut butter, on the other hand, provides an amazing savory flavor and a healthy dose of protein without any junk.

Cinnamon for sugar If warm and cozy had a flavor, this is exactly what it would taste like! Swap cinnamon for sugar in your mixes for a seasonal, low-sugar treat. Feeling adventurous?! Try adding cinnamon and raisins to our Slender Cookie mix; Christmas is served!

Unsweetened applesauce for fat and sugar Applesauce gives the same consistency as butter and other baking fats, plus a hint of sweetness, without the calorie bomb! This works particularly well in any sweet bread, like banana or zucchini, or in flapjacks. We’re addicted to using applesauce in our Slender Flapjacks!

Mashed bananas for fat Bananas are one of the best sources of potassium (important for a healthy heart) and are also a great source of slow-release carbs and fibre (meaning they can keep you feeling fuller for longer). The creamy, thick consistently of mashed bananas works perfectly in place of fat in baking and seriously saves on calories. Try it out with our Slender Banana Muffin mix!

Prune purée for fat
Prune purée for fat Team brownie?! We’ve also got you covered; prune purée is the perfect butter substitute in brownies! Prunes are high in fibre and add a natural sweetness, helping you also cut down on the amount of sugar in your bakes. Combine 3/4 cup prunes with 1/4 cup boiling water, and puree. Give it a go in our Slender Brownie mix!

It’s no secret here at Protein World that we're big fans of making our favourite foods healthier. We’re also keen to hear from you; which of the above swaps have you tried, and do you have any other top tips for the PW Kitchen?! Share these with us on our social by tagging @pwbakeoff.
